As Aung San Suu Kyi is going to The Hague to make blanket denials against genocide accusation, I am thinking why the attempts of the West to shape us in the Global South through human rights awards, media coverage and free trips to Europe/North America are almost futile.
Aung San Suu Kyi herself is the product of the BBC and Nobel Peace Committee. Without the BBC coverage of her in 1988 and during house arrest, and the peace prize, her personality cult would not grow this big.
At this point, fair to say Aung San Suu Kyi is an opportunist. But the western media and diplomats ignored many foreshadows. She always says she loves military which is founded by her father. She doesn’t listen to her followers. But of course it didn’t fit the narrative back then.
The system set up by the West and their incentives boost people's ego and they seek personal fame. They consider it their career to talk about human rights and democracy as they receive approval from the West. Once they have an alternative, they don't bother to these values
Sadly, I am still seeing redflags in some activists praised by western journalists, diplomats for being progressive today. One's been accused of sexual harassment but he’s still known for his activism in the press. Another one would not hesitate to hang out with Chinese officials
leaves a bad taste in me when young Burmese leaders meet a person like George Bush. But how many Burmese can deny a free trip to Washington DC. All instagrammable moments https://www.facebook.com/georgewbush/photos/a.123745001001234/3169162669792770/?type=3&theater
