Things we used to look at as rare occurrences have now become common and usually we make a storm, it calms and the basic elements remain the same...social media helps to reveal, but does it help to heal societal issues? The teacher/student video shows far more problems than anger
Let us look at several elements:
1) We had a much gentler Jamaican society, community and family structure in times gone by...many negatives were present, but didn't seem to dominate our existence...we didn't arrive where we are today in an overnight basket floating down a river
We have allowed every possible breakdown in social existence, made every excuse possible while passing the buck, but expect to get the most favourable results...that is even worse than insanity, as we don't only do the same things, but attempt to consistently add bad practices
2) School has always been a place deserving of respect, an educational, social training and development base for children, orchestrated/run by the most competent set from within our own...it should accept all types as a student body with an aim to produce model citizens for life
Have we maintained the core principles and objectives re schools at all levels within? Doubt it...we have cut and carved some sweet spot schools and created some other jungle and zoo institutions under the same claim...all this while making excuses for all participants
We don't believe in collective responsibility...teacher blames parents, parents blame teachers, ministry and administrators at loggerheads, John Public picks several sides and we all stir the pot of the problems as they continue along...but we all expect solutions hmmm?
3) We believe schools with good administrations have good teachers, create great students, better involvement from parents and get better results not just in academics, but overall...seems some schools handpick as best possible to have an easier ride from jump..."avoid riff raff"
If you skim the supposed cream off the top and lump together, you're more likely to have a nicely buttered collective of 1st class teachers/students with nice backgrounds, parents and better pockets...and the school will shine like the best bulb...leave the riff raff for the zoo
So by public sentiment Immaculate is a polished institution and Pembroke Hall transformed from a wild jungle into a maddening zoo within the confines of walls...what role does the admin/teacher/student/parent play in the difference between a palace and a pigpen?
If parents insist (no matter their background) children must abide, students follow into school, teachers maintain their mandate and admin actually functions effectively...sounds like all are on the same page hmmmm...imagine the possible results? No excuses or buck passing...damn
Education is a commitment by and from all involved in the process with one goal in sight...no matter the resources, background, salaries, location etc...we can't have admin sightseeing, teacher let go the wheel, students screaming and parents asleep in the back seat in one car
What we see in a short video between teacher/student is an indication of big problems within that school, other schools, communities, parishes all across Jamaica...we have serious societal problems and abdication of roles/responsibilities...FAR beyond the video, let us all change
