Between 25 Nov. and 4 Dec., with my colleagues at Kent and across 60 other UK universities, we will be taking strike action in response to longstanding institutional inequality & exploitation. As I prepare myself for the industrial action, and the wonderful and difficult things that they bring, The Law Teacher accepts an article that took me years(!) to complete. I see it as an attempt to articulate what I and many other of my colleagues do, week after week. (2/4)
In the article, I use critical realism to reflect on how I and many other of my colleagues, who are attentive to history, theory, context and power, try to offer a transformative learning experience in the classroom. One that pays attention to both structure and agency. (3/4)
I need to thank all my mentors and colleagues who have shown me the value of transformative teaching, and all those many other fellow travelers who teach in this way, each day, regardless of the difficult situation of the higher education sector. The strike is on!
