Years ago a coworker couldn& #39;t print at home. 5 techs all went to the home and then they called me. I want to stress here that this was before it was common to use remote control software and that I realize we have them now but you can also have the user send you video now 1/
You can& #39;t make assumptions. You have to often see with your eyes what the environment is. In this case 5 techs went, all came back having failed.

Because they spent all this energy into fixing what wasn& #39;t broken that they missed the obvious. 2/
The female pins on the back of an old cable had come off and were stuck to the Male pins of the parallel port making a good connection impossible. User just jammed cable thinking that& #39;d work.

Once removed and cable reseated, printing resumed.

None of the 5 LOOKED.

I did. 3/
They also didn& #39;t talk to the user to find out a timeline of events. Bc they knew more than him except when I got there he said they talked over him and he was trying to tell them something was up with the cable.

Boss was pissed bc I was expensive. Made the most OT.

Anyway, got promoted over the 5. Let go 2 of the know it alls.

15k raise.

User at home went on to become VP. He promoted me as his first exec decision.

We still keep in touch.

Don& #39;t. Make. Assumptions.

Drop. Your. Ego.

The user you help might wind up your boss.
