I get the idea here...and I never want to encourage an environment where people’s creative effort is unnecessarily harshly criticized...but artists/promoters need to know and respect their fans’ tastes. https://apple.news/AA08fa3BAROWp_HEnuhFvDQ">https://apple.news/AA08fa3BA...
Ticket prices are soaring, like the article mentioned, which means artists and promoters have increased responsibility to ENTERTAIN. That’s why people come to shows, ultimately; to be entertained.
Artists have loved to complain and blame the fans for ‘flat’ energy at (I’ve witnessed this, personally, on multiple occasions) when, in reality, it’s the ARTIST’S responsibility to entertain the crowd...not the other way around.
I do believe that it’s important that artists can have spaces to explore their creativity and feel safe to take risks, a risk still implies that it might not work.
Maybe this is a sign that the era of artist‘s being worshipped and obsessed over for their every move is coming to an end?
How many times have we seen a celebrity (musician or otherwise) lamenting the loss of ‘regular’ life as a result of their fame. Well...maybe that time is coming to a close. And that’s okay.
But in exchange for a feeling of normalcy artists may open themselves up to criticism and lose some of the confidence that they can ‘do no wrong’ in front of their fans. You certainly can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Ultimately, an entertainer is being paid to entertain. If they fail to do so and want to go have a Twitter fit about it, they’re no different than the stereotypical Hollywood director making a flop and blaming the audience for not understanding. Bad ideas are bad ideas.
Tl;dr: I love @VICE but this article is whack. (Wack?)
And I have mad respect for @tylerthecreator and really enjoy his music but the only decision worse than Drake (in that context) was to shame your fans for not buying in.
As an artist, you have the responsibility to know your fans as well as you expect them to know you. Listening to them as often as you talk to them may be a good start...
