After a year's break, the 27th anniversary of #silviomeier's 1992 death during a confrontation with neo-Nazis is again being marked with a commemorative demonstration in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain. (Image from 1992) 1/6
But the #silviomeier demo's reorganization and new framing under the #antifaistliebe slogan is not to the liking of all advocates for Meier’s activist remembrance. 2/6
To some of Berlin’s more militant antifascist groups the new demonstration and slogan stands for the neoliberalisation, hipsterisation and mainstreaming of #silviomeier’s activist remembrance. 3/6
The new frame is a softening of the rallying cries that accompanied many of the 25 earlier #silviomeier demos and now characterize much antifascist memory work around the world: #Erinnernheißtkämpfen #rememberingmeansfighting #Gedenkenheißtkämpfen #commemoratingmeansfighting. 4/6
These rallying cries are taking on new relevancy. Not only given the continued growth of a violent far-right but also because the concession of the stewardship of #silviomeier’s annual commemoration in 2018 seems to have started new struggles for his activist remembrance. 5/6
