THREAD Fiona Hill’s impressive turn during the #ImpeachingHearing made me think wonder what a fantasy US Cabinet could look like. Dr Hill would obviously be National Security Advisor, returning to restore order at the centre of decision-making
The Defence Secretary would have to be @KoriSchake, the historian and former aide to General Powell and Senator McCain whose positive brand of Americanism is so needed
Over at Foggy Bottom I think I would install Michelle Flournoy, a former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy under President Obama and founder of @CNASdc.
I would appoint @jessicajackley as @USAID administrator. She has already transformed aid by creating @Kiva and ProFounder and the agency could use more of an entrepreneurial perspective to its mission
Treasury Secretary job could go to the former @pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi who now serves on the Amazon board and so bring both perspective on both new and older firms
Tammy Duckworth, Senator representing Illinois, former U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and a combat veteran wounded in war, would be the Veterans Secretary
The Attorney General plays an important role not just in domestic policy but in foreign policy and I think a smart move would be to bring back to DoJ Zainab Ahmed, a former former prosecutor specialised in investigating and prosecuting terrorism.
As Commerce Secretary I’ve always been impressed by Ginny Rometty, the chair, president, and CEO of IBM.
Over at Health and Human Services I would enlist Gina Raimondo, Governor of Rhode Island and a former health tech investor, giving a good mix of views in the future of the brief
As Agriculture Secretary Cheryl Rogowski would be a smart pick. A farmer she is reinventing the role of the family farm in America and been at the forefront of helping other farmers and farm workers
Education would go to Swati Mylavarapu whose experience in Silicon Valley would be so useful to rethinking this brief while ensuring that everyone gets a great education.
The role of Labour Secretary will only grow in importance given the changes in the workplace. Sara Nelson, the leader of the largest flight attendant union, would be a first choice here
Secretary of Housing and Urban Services would ne entrusted to Belinda Johnson, formerly COO at @Airbnb, for a different approach to the department’s challenges
Transportation is a key brief and Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan would bring an urgency and climate-focused attention to the job
The Energy Department oversees vast scientific work and someone like Stacey Bent, professor of Chemical Engineering and a Vice Provost at @Stanford would being a seriousness of purpose to the mission
Secretary of the Interior would be Debra Haaland, Congresswoman from New Mexico and one of two Native American women elected to the U.S. Congress
The UN ambassador job isn’t always of Cabinet rank but I think it makes sense to keep the role close and prominent. Here @SlaughterAM would do a great job
A US @NATO ambassador doesn’t serve in Cabinet but for a whole host of reasons I would appoint former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch to the role
Finally there is @DHSgov. Here I would suggest Senator @KamalaHarris whose mix of legal and political experience would serve well.
That would be my fantasy US Cabinet. A collection of professionals who strike me would do a great job but also project an image of America overseas that would strengthen the country, its allies and the ideals the country was built on. #MAGA
For the US Trade Representative brief I would approach Carly Fiorini, former HP CEO as the future of trade in technologies will be pivotal especially vis-à-vis China
