The Stone Age is quite a tricky historical concept to teach young children. It’s almost indescribably long (unlike other historical periods or events) and has no famous kings or queens, named inventors, dated discoveries or wars to weave a narrative around. Just a few places ...
Therefore writing about it with a degree of accuracy is always doing to be difficult. Y3 used a structure strip during a stop-start listen-discuss-model-write lesson (on a Friday afternoon, no less!) and it was one of the best lessons I’ve had with them so far this year.
It’s the same pupil’s writing I shared in an earlier tweet because it’s the neatest. But all pupils were able to demonstrate a more nuanced understanding of the Stone Age than simply that people lived in caves. I’m planning to build up to a longer ‘essay’ à la jon_hutchinson_.
