OK, I dove into the infamous 3:27 to start the game for the Bulls to solve Boylen vs. LaVine. Let& #39;s do a little thread to show what I found. I& #39;m known as a big Boylen defender on this app, but FWIW I don& #39;t really agree w/ how he handled this one. Watching his postgame comments /1
it& #39;s very clear his emphasis is on LaVine becoming a 2-way player & he doesn& #39;t feel Zach has done that. But telling the press LaVine made & #39;3 egregious mistakes& #39; crosses a line that most coaches don& #39;t cross. Funny enough, Boylen specifically said he wasn& #39;t going to get into /2
the exact details, but then when being challenged by a reporter almost offered that back pretty combatively. Coaches typically chew out guys in the locker room, but agree to only address things as a team to the media - & in exchange players don& #39;t criticize the coaching. /3
Let& #39;s check the film 1st. MIA& #39;s ATO. LaVine a little lackadaisical chasing Jimmy off staggers. When Jimmy passes the ball, he should jump to the ball & doesn& #39;t. This is a little thing, but likely one of many things Boylen can point to of LaVine just not buying in 2-ways. /4
MIA& #39;s 2nd play. Can sense Boylen& #39;s frustration growing. Again doesn& #39;t jump to ball on pass. When Jimmy gets it back, believe that& #39;s Boylen yelling & #39;STANCE.& #39; Zach just looks disengaged & not really ready to go, which isn& #39;t good 2 min into a game, needless to say. /5
Neither of those egregious. This MAY have been. I& #39;m not sure CHI& #39;s scheme on small/small PNR& #39;s but this would be a relatively easy switch b/w Shaq/Zach. Zach doesn& #39;t switch, Nunn gets a runner. Is that Boylen yelling "ZACH!" right after the bucket? Hard to tell for sure. /6
This PROBABLY is. Zach switched onto Leonard here. Duncan Robinson cuts so Zach calls out switch onto him (fine). Bam tries to drive. Have to know Bam isn& #39;t a midrange guy or a big scorer besides on rolls - he& #39;s looking to pass. Zach over-helps for no good reason; Robinson 3. /7
Here& #39;s another pretty bad one. Again small/small action. Duncan drives closeout. Shaq seems to think Zach is beat so he needs to stop the ball, & clearly wants Zach to recover to his (Jimmy). Mix-up here understandable; but esp. when pushed, Zach should make the EFFORT to fly. /8
Certain this is one. But NOT certain Jim is right. Trans D. Jimmy cuts so Zach has to prevent layup. You COULD argue Zach could& #39;ve stayed in & still sprinted out to Nunn on the pass. But Carter& #39;s jog back to me is much more glaring here & Zach protecting basket understandable. /9
13-0 start. Timeout. Jim yanks LaVine. Don& #39;t really agree w/ that either, 3:27 into game. It is a tough balance b/c you obv. think Zach hasn& #39;t bought in nearly enough to being a 2-way guy, but you& #39;re also on record saying you let guys figure out their mistakes & don& #39;t yank. /10
Any starter would be embarrassed 2 be pulled 3:27 into a game. IMO take a timeout, jump guys a bit, & if they don& #39;t respond STILL use the bench. Zach& #39;s effort not good enough; mistakes made; egregious enough 2 yank him? IMO, no. And def. don& #39;t tell media & #39;egregious& #39; mistakes./11
Regardless, here you can see out of the timeout assistant Roy Rogers I believe reviewing the clips w/ Zach on an iPad. Zach needs 2 give better effort. Boylen didn& #39;t handle perfectly either. Lose-lose. On both guys to figure it out & fix a sinking season. Quickly. /12 #RunWithUs
Leave you w/ this. Here& #39;s 1st shot of game for CHI. Zach& #39;s a 36% 3PT shooter. Good PPS. Sure he shoots well from that & #39;spot.& #39; But no 2 shots are the same. This to me is hunting 3& #39;s, a bad shot, & one of MANY contested 3& #39;s the Bulls take currently. Get 2 your kill spot & shoot./13
Anyway, let& #39;s catch the end of Rockets/Clippers. If you enjoyed, maybe will dive into some more Bulls tomorrow to see what the issues are. Young team. LaVine doesn& #39;t seem to know what it takes to win yet. Not ideal. #BullsNation
