Northwestern University posts a photo that includes a student holding a Taiwanese flag, and after a backlash from Chinese nationalists, include a lengthy update recognizing that some people may have been offended. https://dailynorthwestern.com/2019/11/22/campus/northwestern-instagram-post-featuring-taiwanese-independence-flag-sparks-backlash-interpreted-as-political-statement/
Perhaps we should welcome the increasing Chinese use of woke arguments, because it will discredit them? Or maybe they will win and wokeism will just get worse. Accelerationism and its risks...
One of the nationalist comments on the post
I grew up around immigrants my whole life, and by and large, immigrants to the US appreciate our openness. What is happening w/Chinese elites in the past couple decades seems different. Because China is prosperous, many Chinese students want to return to China and get jobs there.
Because China is a dictatorship, it monitors everything that everyone says, and it also rewards people who toe communist party's line. This is creating incentives for a generation of foreign students to come to US who would then be oppositional to normal liberal norms
At the same time this cohort is getting to US as American students are learning a set of illiberal norms and coming to see offense-taking as a form of power. It is a bad combination.
For those questioning how the Chinese communist party uses these types of arguments, check out what they say about one of our Admirals who is Japanese American. It's the woke racial essentialism deployed for their means. Standpoint epistemology
When a woke person argues that you can't just engage someone's argument -- that they have extra credibility or morality if they happen to share certain immutable traits -- they are deploying the same argument as the Chinese govt questioning Admiral Harris's credibility.
Both systems of thought are an attack on US liberal values, but historically our liberal values are very strong. Can we survive an attack on those values from within and without, though?
