Must-read about how knowledge gaps in medicine are replaced by patriarchal narratives: one of the most problematic aspects of medicine that extends into healthcare. This is why I studied medical feminist studies/sociology in college. A few examples (a thread): https://twitter.com/DrLeanaWen/status/1195354992351367174
“Wandering womb” thought to be the cause of ailments in female bodies: a familiar organ that is still scrutinized and manipulated today

Heart disease presents w/o chest pain in some women yet my my training teaches otherwise = leads to thousands of incorrect diagnoses
Additional disparities:

Historic, non-consensual experimentation on female bodies (HeLa cells, coerced sterilization of Latin American women)

The dismissal of different presentations of pain like chest pain) but also not taking endometrial, menstrual, pelvic pain seriously.
There’s hundreds of other examples (I just threw out a few) and their complexity increases when you think intersectionally about these issues.

One of the most important things I learned in sociology: When we talk about “progress” in medicine, let’s ask “progress for WHOM?”
Is it progress if the ‘cure’ is based on fundamentally incorrect assumptions fabricated by ignorance of the female body and experience? Is it progress if millions are left to cope with a dark history of neglect and coercion?
Idk I’m so tired of hearing “how far we’ve come.” That’s great! But let’s not forget there’s SO many problems in healthcare that can’t be fixed by pills, money, and “bandaid” policies. We need every perspective represented at the lab bench.
We need to educate on and eliminate biased knowledge production. We need INTERSECTIONAL, global solutions in healthcare. We need research, training, and service that acknowledges varied lived experiences.
I talk a lot about the problems, but do I have solutions? IM out here trying to come up with some all I want is a chance to try @UCDavisHealth pls accept me
