MANIFESTOS THREAD: Two weeks ago, @NEF published New Rules for the Economy, which contains more than 100 proposals. Green, Lib Dem, Labour and Plaid manifestos are out. Noting that other manifestos are still to come, below are a few highlights ... https://neweconomics.org/2019/11/new-rules-for-the-economy
⚠️WARNING: This thread is not comprehensive and does not fully reflect the often - and necessarily - complex nature of some of @NEF's or political parties' policy proposals.
🏡HOUSING: In line with @Shelter's call for more than 3 million new social homes over 20 years, @NEF calls for 150k per year: All manifestos recognise the need for lots of new homes for social rent. Lib Dems, Greens and Labour pledge >100k new, zero carbon social homes per year.
🏡HOUSING: @NEF also called for a Public Land and Housing Corporation: Plaid Cymru has proposed a National Housing Company to borrow to invest in 20,000 new council homes over the next 5 years in Wales. The Greens would offer communities a right to buy local land.
👩‍⚕️ADULT SOCIAL CARE: @NEF calls for free personal care for over 65s, extending the model already adopted in Scotland: The Green Party, Plaid and Labour pledge to fulfil this, with Labour promising .
👨‍👦CHILDCARE: Childcare is fragmented and underfunded. @NEF calls for increased funding, paid directly to providers on the condition that they agree to a charter. Greens, Lib Dems, Labour and Plaid all propose to increase funding, with Labour pledging to fund providers directly.
🌲GREEN NEW DEAL: @NEF called for government to invest 2% of GDP (around £50 billion) per year in greening the UK economy: All this week's manifestos make significant green government infrastructure investment pledges of between 1% (Lib Dem, Plaid) and 4% (Green) of GDP per year.
⚖️JUST TRANSITION: Importantly, @NEF called for local just transition funds as the focus for around half of the government investment in greening the economy: The Lib Dems have pledged a Just Transition Fund to support communities 'negatively affected' by climate policies.
💚 WELLBEING BUDGET: @NEF proposes a wellbeing budget in New Rules for the Economy: The Lib Dem manifesto takes this on directly and proposes to budget based on what will improve wellbeing. The Greens pledge to make wellbeing 'the focus of our economy.'
🎇 SHORTER WORKING WEEK: @NEF proposes a Working Time Commission to make recommendations for increases in paid holidays and productivity increases: Labour has pledged a Working Time Commission and is aiming for a 32 hour week average by 2032.
🎇 SHORTER WORKING WEEK: The Greens will support employers to explore a shorter working week.
🤲 INCLUSIVE OWNERSHIP: @NEF proposes that all large businesses must transfer a proportion of shares into funds collectively controlled by workers: Labour has pledged to create worker Inclusive Ownership Funds, which would total 10% of firms' equity after 10 years.
✈️ HEATHROW AIRPORT/HS2: @NEF says scrap both and invest in regional transport, devolving the budget to transport authorities: The Lib Dems would scrap Heathrow but not HS2; the Greens will scrap both. All will support more regional transport investment.
