Thread:

I was on the rowing machine and I was doing an AMRAP, so rowing with a time constraint. On my screen are metrics like strokes per minute, distance, and watts (power output). And it got me thinking about bat sensors like @blastmotion and how we use them. 1/
So since I was pressed for time, like all hitters are (we operate under a time constraint), I had to figure out how to reach my overall distance faster. So I had two choices, I could increase my power per stroke (watts) and sacrifice strokes per minute, or increase frequency 2/
and sacrifice my power output. Since I am built for power (definitely not speed), I chose to make each stroke count, and thus reached my destination faster. That got me thinking about Blast metrics and how we can individualize what we see on screen with what players do/don’t 3/
do well. For example, a player might have a killer bat speed, but a slow time to contact. Another might have great rotational acceleration and TTC, but a slower bat speed. If we know what these metrics mean, we can train a player individually. If a player is fast (bat speed), 4/
but not quick, then their focus needs to be on making their turn tighter. If their swing is quick, but lacks overall speed, that player needs to hit the weight room. If the player has the necessary speed and quickness, but their path is off, they need a mechanical adjustment. 5/
So we need to stop thinking of a bat sensor as something that only measures bat speed. The same way that I need to find ways to reach my destination faster on the rower than just looking at overall distance. We can take what a player does well and then modify their approach, 5/
and often times that means sacrificing bat speed for efficiency. Not all numbers are equally important for each hitter, they all tell a story. Get educated on the metrics, and start to tailor your workouts more efficiently. Oh, and buy a @blastmotion , it will change your life!
