So much is being #published these days dat 1 must believe #publishing industry profits out of mediocre ideas. I have a huge backlog of reading new stuff, but when I read, I wonder y we write so much, other than 2 #feelgood abt being #productive.
#Academics need to #SLOWDOWN. Those of us in permanent n secure positions of #employment nd 2 support junior/younger colleagues (does not mean exploiting poor #PHDs and #postdocs n putting our names to their hard work!), spend more time reviewing n doing other academic labour.
We need 2 spend time listening to new ideas, working wid them, building communities n collaborations rather than locking ourselves in our offices with our #donotdisturb writing times, to finish yet another meaningless manuscript that only adds to CV, doesn't generate new ideas.
Let's stop putting more pressure on colleagues wid #precarious work conditions n #job #insecurities, by becoming #publishingmachines, only because we can afford 2, n we have d resources 2 do so. Our #publicationlists raises undue n unfair expectations in d #academic #echochamber
Am thinking abt dis issue increasingly as I watch brilliant jr colleagues struggle wid confidence issues, writing anxieties because xyz in their circles is widely published n keeps saying, #publishorperish! Those of us critical of #neoliberal academy endorse its shitty practices!
There r other kinds of #academiclabour we can practise n recognise: Create opportunities for people, rd someone's manuscript n provide constructive feedback (not steal their ideas or co publish!), talk 2 sum1 really struggling, write a jt proposal that can benefit a jr. colleague
An act of kindness n generosity towards another will always go a long way 2 make d world better than ur #academic #competency #genius n #professionalism, esp if dey benefit only urself. So many #publications on our CVs go unread, uncited. How imp is it 2 add yet another? #PhD
