On February 14, 2018, Chandler Unified School District #80 implemented their equity and inclusion initiative. This is a breakdown of events, both past and present, that leads us to today. #cancelCorwin #exposeDeepEquity
@ChandlerUnified has repeatedly said that their equity and inclusion initiative has nothing to do with any one event. Here is a Corwin/CUSD80 produced video featuring @roughwater1 saying just as much:
In fact, the @ChandlerUnified administration has repeatedly said that this was something in the works for several years, that there was a committee or council that had been working on the "achievement gap" for several years prior to this initiative.
However, it is interesting that this initiative rolled out after a couple of occurrences in the district:
Regardless if the initiative was long in the works and that these events pushed up the timeline or these events were the genesis of the initiative, the point remains: @ChandlerUnified rolled out its initiative due to these precipitating events.
So on February 14, 2018, @ChandlerUnified adopted their Equity and Inclusion initiative, which included adopting curriculum (the RFP's language, not mine) for teacher training and youth development as well as hiring for a counseling director and equity and inclusion director.
And @ChandlerUnified decided to use a multi-contract award for their equity and inclusion RFP; one of those vendors was Corwin and their Deep Equity and Youth Equity Stewardship programs.
This amount is coming out of both Title II funds and district funds.
While the initiative is supposed to be an ongoing process, the Deep Equity program is intended to be a 3-5 year process but CUSD has chosen to use it as a 5 year program where, during phase 2, the school sites will differentiate based on their needs.
The training in 2018 only included certified staff; in 2019, support staff was included in the equity training.
The training in 2018 started with an in-service in July, where Dr. Sallu was introduced and the staff was introduced to the equity work. This included videos from Dr. Gary Howard from Corwin.
The YES! students also had a 5-day gathering at the beginning of the school year to launch their social justice work.

If @lilyalta did her research, she'd know that parents understand that #DeepEquity is not being taught to kids--but to adults (as if that makes it any better) #cancelCorwin https://twitter.com/Meeeech_L/status/1198665330815426560?s=19
