Since I'm teaching a Sylvia Plath class this weekend, I've been deep-diving into everything Plath, & what I realize is sometimes poets come off as charming, friendly, & smart, but they are really struggling.
In interviews, Plath comes off as almost giddy--engaging, funny, and kind. She's talking about confessional poetry--complimenting Anne Sexton... But I looked at the dates and these are just months before her death. It's a reminder of appearances.
Anyway, I'm just thinking about those of us who struggle with seasons and weather. And I don't know what I'm trying to say here except be kind to yourself and others. And it's not failure to say you need a friend or someone to talk to.
Just a reminder that many times the most creative, intelligent, and "fun-loving" people have a dark side (sometimes one that knocks them down, especially in darker seasons) and we just need to be there for each other.
So pay attention to your creative friends this winter. I know 2019 has been a tough year for many.
