Likely some bias in this poll bc it’s the people who have stuck around.

I used to be neutral or silent on issues. “This is my MAGIC Twitter account, no one wants to hear it. They followed me for decklists”

There’s some truth to that, but it’s wrong. 1/X https://twitter.com/G3RRYT/status/1197703061054971904">https://twitter.com/G3RRYT/st...
When growing your audience? Sure, maybe it helps. But think about who you want your fans to be. Maybe it doesn’t matter to most, but it does to me.

I don’t want to help people who support abusers be more successful. Unfollow me please. 2/X
I have a platform and unless I /really/ milkshake duck, I’ll continue being successful.

What do you want to use your platform for? Well, I was helped along by my privilege. I was never harassed, abused, or disregarded. The opposite was true. 3/X
People listened to me. They rooted for me. They helped me. No questions asked.

It’s not the same for everyone. You don’t have to look far. Jess, Ally, Emma, Autumn, Eli, Christine, etc etc.

I’m outraged daily. You should be too. 4/X
Taking a stand against things is how you make change. There are a ton of things that are wrong in the world and I want them to change. The best thing I can do, probably in my entire life, is use my platform to do that. 5/X
Some see it as complaining, I see it as actually giving a shit about other people. I tweet and rt outrage almost daily, yet the vast majority of people see my presence as spreading positivity.

Why? Because I care about people and making the world a better place. 6/X
If you care about something, don’t be silent. I’ll amplify your voice. I’ll help. Will I lose followers? Yup, but I didn’t want them anyway.

My platform isn’t going anywhere and it’s only grown since deciding to speak up. 7/X
“Be quiet.”

Fuck that.

And telling other people to be quiet?

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck that.

The things they care about and the shit they deal with matters, regardless if you can see it. Listen, and you’ll probably end up just as outraged as they are. 8/X
So I’m going to continue being outraged and I’m going to listen to others who are. I’m going to use my platform to get others outraged too. We’re going to share stories, learn how to be empathetic to each other, and things will change. 9?/X
A couple quotes from today:

“All Evil needs to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

-Bertrand Russell

“Outrage at shit that sucks is fundamental to progress.”

10+ years ago, asked why I don’t vote:

Me: Who is in office has never affected my life.

It was true, and that’s who I was. I didn’t care about the well-being of anyone but myself. The thought didn’t even cross my mind that people were suffering.

That’s privilege. 11/X
Take care of yourself before others. You can’t help anyone if you’re a wreck. But dismissing them isn’t right either. And if you’re as fortunate as I am? I recommending finding a way to give back. It’s the most rewarding stuff I’ve ever done. Cannot recommend higher. 12/X
Magic tells you to only care about your own results. People join teams to help themselves succeed. No one says “Wow Gerry doesn’t understand this limited format, I better spend some of my time helping.”

Zero.

They need to spend that time on them. 13/X
Like, I get how we got to this place. It doesn’t have to be that way. We can be better.

I don’t know how to sell someone on the idea that helping others is a good thing except:

I was miserable. My mentality shifted, now I’m happy. My life has meaning. I’m proud of myself. 14/X
Again, place of privilege: I know where my next meal is coming from, I have people that care about me, etc. There is mental energy and bandwidth I can afford to spend time on this stuff.

But holy shit is it worth it.

Be outraged. Take a stand. Help people.
