Who’s reading, thinking, talking, writing about how social justice language has become so individualistic and capitalistic? My folks are seeing people who are reluctant to join and support organizations — instead people are wanting instantaneous leadership or to be influencers.
Also how volunteering time is being seen as inherently oppressive. I really believe in the concept that it’s a privilege to get paid for social justice work.
Exploitation does happen in our orgs. but some of what I see people call exploitation is a desire that every role, every minute, and every second of work will be compensated. And I don’t think our orgs and certainly not our movements can afford that.
I guess I want a space for a nuanced conversation about resources, what’s possible, what’s not, and what is and isn’t within our values.
