Man listen, being the child of an immigrant is not easy. My mom asked me to call her supervisor and speak on her behalf in regards to a week of work she hasn’t been paid for. So when I added my mom into the call so she could hear what he says, he starts yelling at and says:
“I don’t want to talk to her! No, no! She don’t speak English. You could hear it in her voice! She don’t speak English! ” So my moms supervisor dead starts yelling at me. I responded and said excuse me sir, my mother has every right to be in this phone call, as I am calling
On her behalf. He continued to yell no. So I’m here confused like woah is this really happening to me right now? Me? 1. As a social activist, you already I’m not taking this easy, 2. you’re disrespecting my mother 3. SHE HAS RIGHTS, YOU JUST VIOLATED THEM!
So I’m telling my mom, listen this man has no authority to talk to you in that matter, you have rights, he cannot do that, I going to call the department of labor and also file a complaint with the NYC Commission of Human Right. My mom then was like no that isn’t necessary ...
IM HEATED! Wym no?! Literally on #LatinaEqualPayDay this is happening to me 🤦🏽‍♀️ Our immigrant mothers do not know their rights and are afraid to speak up! We must educate our parents and families. Yes it’s tough, but we must be up for the challenge! Higher education pays off!
Mind you my mom is a US Citizen and still feels she has no power in this country. And that’s all because of lack of education, knowledge, access. We must let them know other wise! She’s telling me no, but watch tomorrow morning.
Mind you, her supervisor had the ultimate Albanian accent, so he is a immigrant himself! So I found that extremely disappointing, yet not surprising. We cannot let these shitty ass jobs play our parents! We need to be able to speak for them. I paid too much for my education
Did my research before anyone tried to play me! Share the resource, we cannot let people get away with hate.
I know I am not the only one who has parents who work multiple jobs, work in shitty conditions, or get treated unfairly. We must use our rights! We cannot be afraid to file a complaint, you have the power to do so, even if you’re undocumented! Do not let authority fool you!
My mom has contacted her supervisor times before, contacted payroll and placement office, and still no results. It’s time to take action, she’s been waiting since September. Since I’m now learning of these matters, I refuse to make her wait any longer.
This is what happens when you mess with an educated Latinas mom 🤷🏽‍♀️
