Reasons why Kate Mara would make an amazing Jean Grey when the X-Men join the MCU: A Thread
A disclaimer: This thread is not intended to throw shade at either Famke Janssen or Sophie Turner's portrayals of Jean. I discovered Jean as a character through the original X-Men movies and I think both Famke and Sophie have done excellent jobs.
That said, first and foremost: Kate is a very good actress with great range. Have a look at her IMDb ( https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0544718/ ) and you'll see she has popped up in all sorts of films, from the indie to the more mainstream. IMO she stands out even in movies that are not that great.
While we're on that topic, Kate has played several complex characters, with traits that could be viewed as unlikable. My view of Jean is as someone who is often seen by others as perfect but has plenty of her own demons to deal with. I think Kate would excel at that.
Kate is a natural redhead. Not essential to play Jean, but it would be nice to see her onscreen with a hair color that isn't that slightly fake-looking bright red she's sometimes had.
Kate is 5′2″. I believe Jean is now said to be 5′6″, but in the original Dave Cockrum sketches of Phoenix she was said to be 5′4″. The idea of someone being short but extremely powerful the way Jean is just delights me.
Kate is from Bedford, NY, which is only about an hour and a half from Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, which is where Jean is from. Again, not essential, but it is kind of great that she already has the right accent.
Kate is currently 36. By the time the movies were to be made, she would likely be in her late 30s/early 40s. I really like the idea of having the older cohort of X-Men be around that age, particularly the women. You rarely get to see female superheroes in that age category.
Kate has actually played a telekinetic person before in a movie called Zoom in 2006. This is more of an aside, but it would be fun to see her with that superpower again over a decade later.
Finally, I'd love to see her follow in the footsteps of Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan as an actor who was under-served in a Fantastic Four movie and went on to do great things in the MCU 😂 I'm sure whoever Marvel ends up casting will be great, but I really hope it's her.
An amendment to this thread, because why not: per this video, Kate Mara took the cameo in Iron Man 2 in part because it was hinted that she might be able to come back for a bigger role. Marvel, you know who she'd be perfect for? 😉
