Student: I keep getting mixed up when I have to spell words with a C or a K.
Me: Do you mean when words end with the /k/ sound?
Student: No. I mean when words start with a C or a K. I don’t know which one to choose. 1/4
Me: If the word begins with a /k/ sound and either has an E or an I after it, then it must have a K. If you use a C, the sound would change to a /s/. Then a word like “city” would be pronounced as “kitty.” 2/4
If a word starts with a /k/ sound and has an A, O, or U after it, a C will most often be used. Think cat, cot, and cut.
Student: Oh, that’s what you do? I thought it was one big, grown-up secret! You know, when adults just whisper to each other and don’t want kids to hear! 3/4
I almost fell on the floor laughing 😂- that’s a perfect way to describe the need for #ExplicitInstruction‼️ IT SHOULD NOT BE A SECRET‼️ Many children will not learn through discovery. #StructuredLiteracy 4/4
