The image of a church doesn't remind them of, say, the Goan Inquisition or land acquisition. The image of a mosque doesn't remind them of, say, take your pick from Bhansali's muse to Schuer's.

The image of a flag, not even a temple, takes them to high flights of drunken fancy.
You now see where the asymmetry comes from. When they, or worse, we, compare one with the other as if they exist on the same pedestal in some morally uplifted, constitutionally valid, intellectually validated universe, we are simply falling prey to the beast of false equivalence.
If you have a patch of grass and a copse of trees, the only way to level the growing field is to cut off the trees.
