I'm going to do sort of a day-in-the-life series for anyone curious what a sports reporter does. It will be a thread, so if you're not interested, you can just go to the arrow in the upper right of this tweet and mute it. Anyway, it's midnight, so we're starting now!
I got home nine minutes ago, and am about to start editing sound from Ohio State's 86-51 win over Stetson.
While editing, I came across a pretty
comment from Stetson coach Donnie Jones about Kyle Young, so I made it into a "video." It's late, and won't get much traction now if I post it to @610wtvnnews, so I'll do that in the morning, but... #PreviewOfComingAttractions:

(Want to give @chasshill credit here, especially because he had an excellent followup to his original question.)
So I've just emailed the station clips from the basketball postgame interviews, and loaded the raw audio into a folder where they can pull anything else they might want. (I hope that it's rare that I don't catch everything they need, but better safe than sorry.)
Again, I've been multitasking. My boss wants us to be really proactive on social media this week, so while I was cutting audio, I also made a graphic for Instagram, kind of a cheeky, we know @OSU_AD just forgot to mention we'll be at the game Saturday with ESPN, Fox, & BTN.
(Like the video I shared with you earlier, I'll post this from our Instagram at a better time for audience engagement. Here's where we're at if you want to follow! https://www.instagram.com/610wtvn/ )
My first goal when I started at @610wtvnnews was to help make our Twitter feed a place you could go and always find the top Columbus sports news. That's always an ongoing process, but now I've added helping beef up our delivery of news, news and being more active on Instagram.
Now I'm going to charge my camera batteries (on a busy day I can go through 3 or 4) and try to get to bed.
Ugh. I have the world's worst super power: I always wake up shortly before the alarm goes off. Seriously, my alarm woke me one single time while I was in college. (Twice if you include the time I kicked the numbers, and set an alarm for 1:50, not 5:10 a.m.)
This has now been posted. https://twitter.com/610wtvnnews/status/1196781826712506371?s=20 So we're off and running! Efficiency experts tell you not to check your email first thing, but that's how I know what I need to work on, so I've looked at my inbox already. Five messages so far.
So the boss liked the Instagram post.
I have also now updated our YouTube page with two interviews. @MattMcCoyRadio and @joelrileywtvn do a really good job of supplying content for our channel! Here's that link if you want to subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcwdZCkQ30k4v6TApg3GRsg?view_as=subscriber

I'm at Ohio State now. Here's my view. – at Woody Hayes Athletic Center
I've been working on a summary of Day's press conference that I hope to post as soon as this is over. The shell/intro of the piece was written during halftime of the basketball game. I took a photo of Day today, because some neurotic part of me doesn't want to use a generic shot.
Article posted to the @610wtvnnews and Facebook. I will try to update it with audio and maybe video later: https://twitter.com/610wtvnnews/status/1196844340728909825?s=20
Break in the action, so I have a chance to catch up with @MattMcCoyRadio on office gossip. (I'm not in the studio often. To his great credit, my boss once told me the studio isn't where news happens, so that's not where I should spend my time.)
Okay, gossip sesh over. My gosh my co-workers are boring.
I think you've probably gathered that a lot of this job is multitasking. We're listening to Ohio State players right now, but it's good to also monitor Twitter, because, for instance, I was able to ask Justin Fields about this just now: https://twitter.com/Ben_Jones88/status/1196847331376844800?s=20
We're waiting to see if Robert Landers will talk to the media today or tomorrow, and while I'm waiting, I'm working on loading the Ryan Day audio to our site. Huge assist on this from @ERieserd00d, who should be considered a rising star in this biz. He is sooooo darn good.
Media availability over, so I'm loading the Ryan Day audio now, and buying my parking pass for tonight's Blue Jackets game. One note here that I think you'll enjoy? When I started in radio, Jim Tressel gave me the last question of each of his press conferences...
...Once when I asked him why, he told me his mother taught him a woman always gets the last word, so you might as well give it to them, but in truth, I think he was making sure a young, female reporter wasn't being overlooked. And because he had me ask the *last* question...
...I always had to think of something that *nobody else would come up with.* I believe that sharpened my thinking and made me a better reporter today. Or, at least, I hope so.
Post has been updated with Ryan Day's audio: https://610wtvn.iheart.com/featured/lori-schmidt/content/2019-11-18-ryan-day-press-conference-penn-state-week/
Just sent my co-workers graphics they can use for their social media posts regarding our station's coverage this weekend. So you might be seeing these throughout the week.
Will be posting this tomorrow morning from the @610wtvnnews account. Not a "fun" fact, but a fact: My first paying news job in Columbus was as a video editor.
Every week, I take notes on Ohio State's upcoming opponent and channel my inner @Fahrenthold. Here's what I have on Penn State.
We keep a photo gallery for 610 WTVN, and I just added the few shots we got last night from the basketball game. The gallery is searchable by name, date, and sport. Yes. Yes, those are pictures of the Frisbee dogs that perform at halftime. Well spotted.
And more multitasking. I'm also monitoring this on my cellphone, so I can tweet Ohio State's ranking from @610wtvnnews.
I like getting to Blue Jackets games early, because I get to say hi to @LeoWelsh and @MikeTodd614, watch warmups, and take photos like this shot, which looks like Savard and Gavrikov in the next season of True Detective having just learned the results of the DNA test.
Helping me get to games early is this organizational tool that my Mom and brother came up with. It hangs right outside the garage door, and has hooks for my media and parking passes, along with a laminated list of things I need to bring with me.
And with about 4 minutes to go in the Blue Jackets game, it is past time for me to work on a graphic with the final score. I'll make a couple versions to account for various outcomes.
Okay. Final score posted. Interviews conducted. I've just returned from talking to the Blue Jackets players and Torts. That happens the bowels of the arena, where you pass this wall art, which is pretty cool, but...
You'll like this nugget. From what I'm told, the NHL permits video, but not still photography in the dressing room. Which seems odd, but it's a rule that I've adhered to, because I'm nothing if not an American, sports-reporting Hermione Granger in a hat.
Time for another change of venue. I'm heading home, where I'm going to edit the audio from the Blue Jackets win, plus work on what I didn't get done from today's Buckeye press conference and the CFP show where committee chair Rob Mullens discussed LSU and Ohio State.
(Tip for young people in the business, though? Clean up your seat in the press box. It won't get you ahead, or anything like that. Its just the nice thing to do.)
Packed up. Time to go. Good night, Nationwide. – at Nationwide Arena
Guess that should just about do it. The rest of tonight will be similar to last night: Lots of time spent cutting audio, and multitasking by also trying to work ahead as much as I can in terms of graphics, video, and research. ie. I have a few more hours of work ahead of me.
Tomorrow I'll check in for any feedback or questions you might have! But for this evening?
