When Spike Lee is teaching your film at his NYU class and it’s time to get up but you can’t move...
Recap below.
3 days ago Shia and me got an email to come to NYU and bring a #HoneyBoy on Blu-Ray. I didn’t even know that Spike Lee is a Proffesor there and been teaching there every week for 15 years!
I always have such mixed feelings about film schools because I could never afford them and because I think I wouldn’t be the filmmaker I am if I went to one.
But this was still a surreal freak out of gratitude.
I sat next to Mr Lee as he watched the film with the class and my life kind of flashed in front of my eyes.
I remembered seeing “She’s gotta have it” in a small town in Israel. It wasn’t even a cinema... Just a screen like Cinema Paradiso. So far away.
While I’m hard at my flashbacks I can hear him laughing & reacting. I know he was supposed to do a film with Shia and had to let him go when the arrest happened.
10 min in he turns to me, grabs my shoulder and says - This is a really good film.
Last 15 min of the film I hear Spike crying softly. I start crying too..
I’m not sure Cinema means to me what it means to him but here I was. Thinking about my father. And wondering if he’s thinking about his...
He doesn’t know and I didn’t know how to tell him that in 2013 I spent a few weeks hanging out with Bill Lee because I thought maybe him and Susan will be one of the stories in my doc LoveTrue.
After the film is over we do a Q&A with him for the class.
He asks, could you hear me? In the dark? ❤️
