It's actually pretty simple. A part of politics is selling out some part of your coalition in favor of another part, or in the case of a losing coalition, a new partner. Everyone is convinced that they are the ones who will be sold out. https://twitter.com/ne0liberal/status/1194821191418167296
Because this process is never named explicitly, people cannot comprehend it logically and somehow this ends in everyone feeling sold out whether or not they actually were.
A great appeal of hashtag resistance politics is the notion that no one needs to be sold out, because the other side cheated and somehow if we just run the game again fairly the losing coalition becomes the winning coalition and no hard decisions have to be made.
But the simple fact is there is no authority that can unrig the game. At some point you simply have to accept the rules for what they are and make the hard decisions. We will have to make sacrifices oh, some more than others. Let's have that conversation in the open.
Credit goes to @dlind for introducing "the hashtag resistance" into the Discourse and also for a piece or Tweet I have lost yet again discussing how every faction comes with a cost and you have to think hard about who bears it.
I would obviously prefer that multiracial democracy is not on the chopping block, but suppose for a moment we can only have that or abortion rights, or neither.

"Reasonable" is the wrong test. https://twitter.com/sneeje/status/1194990837714890753
Hashtag actually, politics itself is morally fraught with difficult choices and refusing to make hard decisions and letting the other side run the table would be morally bankrupt. https://twitter.com/Jeffrey_Baird/status/1194998713254592512
All of us care about different things. We negotiate within our coalitions about what important as weighted by achievability. Multilateral open borders would be a huge benefit to the most vulnerable. It is not reasonable of me to demand my coalition endorse it or get out.
So to answer this question and the related version of "who are you gonna sell out" let me point out we've already sold out the global poor. https://twitter.com/apark2453/status/1195000377382449152
You say this like they haven't already.

Nothing about the current mix of politics is a natural state of things. You are not riding the outmost wave of the right side if history. Compromises were already made and you made them. https://twitter.com/KarlRunser/status/1195000650700079104
Never fight the hypothetical. https://twitter.com/burkinator20xx/status/1194999530376163329?s=19
It's absolutely fine to barge in! I just may not respond because I feel like I've already addressed the substantive points elsewhere in thread. https://twitter.com/Dirk2112/status/1195001173729841154?s=09
Three things:

1. Valid doesn't mean what you think it means.
2. I was talking about within the left of center coalition
3. "Conservative" doesn't exist as a naturally occurring monolith, it is also a coalition. Pick a part you want, but check the price. https://twitter.com/Jeffrey_Baird/status/1195000906787545088
There is a compelling story that racial minorities are the ones traditionally sold out by the left-of-center coalition. That should probably stop but it should definitely be at least acknowledged instead of hiding it under white working class rhetoric. https://twitter.com/Dirk2112/status/1195002070421688323

We'll brush past "acqueise" and I'll refer you to the entirety of my timeline. But I'll give you some specifics to QT and be mad about. Guns. Pro-life rhetoric. Cultural appropriation rhetoric is actually reactionary so I guess I already gave that up. https://twitter.com/Jeffrey_Baird/status/1195003530584711168
Lessen the likelihood my kids come home to a flaming cross on our lawn. https://twitter.com/Jeffrey_Baird/status/1195006660152045575?s=19
Read my last name again and consider whether I may have thought about that. https://twitter.com/gilmored85/status/1195007039648518145?s=19
Well, then try reviewing this thread for where I said we should sell out racial minorities and other underprivileged folks.

Spoiler, I'm advocating for transparency and suggesting we sell them out by default when we pretend there are no hard choices. https://twitter.com/gilmored85/status/1195008184055992322?s=19
That was a bit rude, for which I apologise. I'm just annoyed that I wrote a whole thread about this dynamic it seems to have not helped at all. Also I need to eat lunch.
Yes, exactly. The first step is understanding what your values are and critically interrogating them. What do you care about and who would you sell out given the conflict.

Because the conflict will come. All of us are fighting for control of the trolley. https://twitter.com/TrudyKarlson/status/1195009232342593536?s=19
Guilty https://twitter.com/schnufflerowner/status/1195011880840048640?s=19
In a weird way I'm almost getting the fight about prioritization that I asked for.
God, I love eco-urbanists. https://twitter.com/schnufflerowner/status/1195016484180942848?s=19
I mean, whatever you mean by your people, them too?
It's both! I for one would happily sell a lot of the left wing economic agenda in favor of less racism at home and abroad. But even more accurately I've already sold many of my economic priorities to be in the racial minority coalition. https://twitter.com/hierodula/status/1195016826394202120?s=19
Me: I should do a thread explaining the fundamental paradigm of how coalitions work because people don't get it.

Also me: why are all these people in my mentions getting salty about the fundamental paradigm of coalitions. https://twitter.com/JurisDudence/status/1195019253298143233?s=19
I'm told describing the dynamic by which racial minorities have gotten screwed in left of center politics means I am advocating for it. https://twitter.com/JurisDudence/status/1195021985782337541?s=19
I'm negotiating within the coalition that will stop the cross-burners, not with the cross-burners. https://twitter.com/KarlRunser/status/1195020446288220160?s=19
Please pause and read carefully.

There are people want to engage in a campaign of racial terror
They are stopped by a mix of signals and the threat of enforcement
One coalition cares more about providing that mix than the other
I need them to win. https://twitter.com/KarlRunser/status/1195028989808726016?s=19
To vastly oversimplify it, it's important that some people aren't in charge of the judicial system apparatuses and I have to think hard about what I'm willing to give up to make that happen.

I am trying to get you to understand that so do you.
If you refuse to make this choice, then what your prioritizing is you not having to prioritize, and the cost you pay is the other side winning.
A moral responsibility that they may yet answer for at the gates of the Kingdom, pastor. But that does not help me much in the here and now. https://twitter.com/KarlRunser/status/1195030730759262209?s=19
They absolutely did sacrifice. If nothing else, lots of naturally conservative nonwhite people who were once or would have been a Republican are out.

Turns out there was enough other people left for a lot of victories. https://twitter.com/apark2453/status/1195001122165022722?s=19
Maybe!

I go back and forth on this. I do think the smoke filled rooms and/or mediated by advocacy organization models seem to be failing at that task, but I look at my Canadian friends arguing about whether to vote Green or not and I'm not optimistic. https://twitter.com/arjun_tamul/status/1195054306606628865?s=19
