1) Let’s talk #JewsForJeremy. From the start Labour’s response to the bad publicity surrounding it’s antisemitism (AS) issue has been a contradictory two-hander. While the leaders appear to accept it is there, frequently say how it saddens them and how they are trying to
2) stamp it out, their MPs, councillors and online ‘outriders’ deny it exists: it is all a smear. That’s where the AsAJews come in. Divide and conquer is an old colonialist strategy and this is what Labour is effectively doing to the Jewish community.
3) From the moment the problem became an issue the fringe group Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) was set up. They are a small minority of anti-Zionist Jews, some of whom have been on extremist fringes of pro-Palestinian activity with Corbyn for decades.
4) The ironic thing about JVL is that several of them have been suspended by the Labour Party for antisemitism. Like Glyn Secker. https://twitter.com/jack_sommers/status/1193967682368024577?s=21
5) The other ironic thing is that even as they attempt to deny AS in Labour, people are being racist towards them. In this case 👇🏽a JVL member was called ‘Shylock’ by a fellow councillor. https://twitter.com/sidedman/status/1192710988778393600?s=21
6) Even Momentum boss Jon Lansman sees them as dodgy:
He wrote of JVL: ‘The organisation was set up to oppose the conclusion that I’m afraid that every significant Jewish community organisation has arrived at about the Labour Party.’
7) Almost inevitably, he had a heap of antisemitic abuse in return.
8) But it’s not just JVL. There are a tonne of online accounts, many of them nameless, claiming to be #JewsForJeremy. Often, sickeningly, they mention a relative who died in the Holocaust.
9) And then there is a handful who have made a video in support of the racist free Labour Party. The most prominent among them was the actress @Miriammargolyes, a confessed militant atheist and anti-Zionist.
10) But the weird thing is, when I met Miriam yesterday, she admitted that she’d been considering voting Lib Dem because of Labour’s antisemitism problem. She only changed her mind because she worried they would not fund the NHS as much as Labour.
11) She added: 'I think there are elements in the
party that Jeremy Corbyn hasn't controlled adequately.' Not quite the ringing endorsement of the video she made a few days earlier.
12) So next time you see a #JewsForJeremy think about divide and conquer. Think about how Labour are tokenistically using a handful of Jews to pretend they don’t have an antisemitism problem. A problem which they could just have stamped out.
