I never watched the comments by @jessieraeallen regarding hockey, but read them. But my social media feeds were full of outrage regarding “privileged white boys” and “bullies.” The bullies part is definitely something I take umbrage with. Most hockey kids are good kids
When you extrapolate that to NHL stars and you probably won’t find better humans than Sidney Crosby, John Tavares or Carey Price. Sure there are some bad seeds (I’ve seen them) but I believe they are mostly good people.
While the sport is still male dominated, plenty of girls play now as well. What’s lost is that the sport is becoming more elitist, exclusive and unavailable to many kids in this country. My kid plays hockey, he’s privileged compared to many, including me at a similar age.
But should she be fired? Probably not. I think a more measured response is needed and I’m sure she’s getting major online bullying herself now (hypocrites, much?). Partially, as some sort of pseudo revenge for the deserved Don Cherry firing.
But those that are going off should read “Before the Lights Go Out: A Season Inside a Game on the Brink” by @SeanFitz_Gerald. I recently listened to the authors comments on the @Steve_Dangle podcast and it was very informative. Check it out. I have the book ordered.
A little self awareness goes a long way in 2019. Maybe checking some people’s own privilege (can’t believe I wrote that) would help before taking to the keyboard as so many quickly have. We try and do what we can and donate old gear but some families just can’t afford it.
But that $5000 price tag she’s throwing around isn’t necessarily accurate and not everyone can afford trips, either. I think positive social aspect of being on a team during hockey season outweighs that of going to Disney or Europe for a week.
As an addendum to what’s probably an unnecessary twitter thread, my daughter chose dance and those expenses are as much or more as my younger sons minor hockey costs. If he pursues hockey more, those costs will grow.
