It seems like cognitive dissonance to want to lead a country, yet to have such disdain for ordinary people. But when you understand the backgrounds of these leaders, you understand their concept of leadership is not stewardship. It’s competing for primacy on a global stage.
At home, then at Eton, then at Oxford or Cambridge, they learn about great battles, about all night treaty negotiations. They learn about sanctions and meetings with tyrants in secluded locations. They don’t learn about NHS waiting times. They don’t learn civil service.
They emerge believing the goal of a prime minister is to make sure the nation tops the league table each season. Something which does not matter at all to the people actually living in the country. Cuts move you up the economic leader board, but they kill your people.
They see dedicating their premiership to bettering the lives of the people as being lame, boring, and ultimately a waste of time. They sneer at countries that are not global leaders, but broadcast ‘national happiness and work life balance.’
They see the people as servants to the cause of their premiership. They do not see themselves as our servants. This is not just conservatism, though it lives in its DNA. This is a problem at the heart of British culture and in our culture of leadership.

Now, we need stewards.
