I thought I would throw my hat in the ring as a half insider half outsider, casual observer of the @You_Need_A_Lift @Doonvorcannon criticism that has turned into a rift between #NoontideTwitter and @bronzeagemantis et al. I’m aware no one will probably ever read this. A thread:
First off, I am a twitter nobody, I have few followers and mostly maintain an account to see interesting perspectives. BAP was the undeniable king at this and completely changed the political landscape for me. His book was full of insight and filled with quirky entertainment.
From an outside perspective, though, he isn’t someone talked about. When I try to show friends it maintains a level of cringe, and without a fair amount of prefacing it looks a bit strange unless they are already thoroughly versed in twitters unique universe.
At this time I was thoroughly a BAPist, I read all his tweets and retweets. This is how I discovered Uly. He said something interesting and I followed. Slowly he became the most interesting person on twitter to me.
Yes, Uly is abrasive and elitest, and at the beginning I barely knew what he was saying half the time. But the slog was worth it. His is a totally different mindset from BAPs and this is good. With BAP I was still mostly just angry at everything I saw.
And from his followers and his own writing it seems the goal is to wallow in your rage waiting for the collapse where we will then take over. It’s rather romantic but mostly just self masterbatory day dreaming. Perhaps I am interpreting BAP incorrectly but that was my experience.
Uly on the other hand, says to ignore the insanity surrounding us and live. DIVE IN IT has become a personal mantra. He is able to distill large concepts into a tweet or short thread with remarkable ability.
Uly and BAP both preach excellence but Uly adds the caveat to only focus on what you can control and ignore the rest. This is more important than you can imagine. Its greatest feat is that it has brought joy back to my life. I have a long way to go but I am not as angry as I was.
Uly has taken up the mantle of critic and he is damn good at it. What is the point of an excerpt to a book of not to choose to read it? Can you not tell from the title of a book promoted by left wing twitter that it will be garbage?
Who here would get past Trevor Noah’s Born a Criminal book title? It may be filled with insight to Apartheid SA, but most of us would never get to the dust jacket. Doons book may speak to some people, that’s great.
Uly simply shared its own excerpts to show it to be the ranttings of an angry mental middle schoolers fantasy. He didn’t have to say it I saw it. I moved on. I’m not going to read every twitter book that is released BAPs half assed endorsement included.
Where is his review if he’s even read it? There is far too much great literature to waste my time on it. What is startling are the attacks on Uly for his criticism. He is not stopping anyone from reading. And the vast majority of BAPs followers will never even see his attack.
Blind support is the equivalent of the welfare state. If BAP were to write an honest review that is one thing. But as it stands Doons book has one review on Amazon. We all owe much to BAP, and I will always follow his twitter, but maybe no longer him. I stand with Uly.
I am on twitter for insight I can’t get from anywhere else, and hopefully my rant doesn’t cause anyone to block me for giving an honest opinion. BAP will retain the influence, pictures of bodybuilders will meme more people to start lifting than intellectual takes ever will.
But BAP May have created a monster, a twitter universe that fantasizes of greatness, waiting for their day, that the world they despise comes crashing down, but that day may never come. #NoontideTwitter
