Situated in the center of Brandenburg is the separate Federal State of Berlin, which serves as the Capital of Germany.

The present State of Brandenburg was re-established on 3 October 1990 upon German reunification.

Brandenburg is bordered by Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the north, Poland in the east, the Freistaat Sachsen in the south, Saxony-Anhalt in the west, and Lower Saxony in the northwest.

The Oder River forms a part of the eastern border, and the Elbe River forms a portion of the western border.

The main rivers in the state itself are the Spree and the Havel.

In the southeast there is a wetlands region called the Spreewald; it is the northernmost part of Lusatia, where the Sorbs, a Slavic people, still live.

These areas are bilingual, with both the German and Sorbian languages used.

Brandenburg is known for its well-preserved natural environment and its ambitious natural protection policies which began in the 1990s.

15 large protected areas were designated following Germany's reunification. Each of them is provided with state-financed administration and a park ranger staff, who guide visitors and work to ensure nature conservation. Most protected areas have visitor centers.

The State also hosts the Lower Oder Valley National Park which covers 106 sq kms.

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin is named for the former capital city of the Margraviate of Brandenburg, as are Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.

Population density is relatively high in Berlin but significantly lower in the surrounding State of Brandenburg.

The population of the State was about 2.5 million people at the end of 2017.

GDP per capita was €29,400 or $34,700 in 2018.

As in other former parts of East Germany, the lack of modern infrastructure and exposure to West Germany's competitive market economy brought widespread unemployment and economic difficulties.

In recent years, however, Brandenburg's infrastructure has been modernized and unemployment has slowly declined.

It is now well connected into the German Highway system, with good ring roads around the major metropolitan centre of Berlin.

And this provides it with good connections into the major Freight Routes across Europe.

It is also well connected into the German Federal Railroad System, which is heavily electrified.

And this provides it with full access to the major Rail Freight Corridors of Europe.
