Last night in Chinese class we were taught the word 卡拉ok (Mandarin ka la OK, karaoke). Boomer who sits at the back chuckled and commented on how full Mandarin is of English words and how you can barely say a sentence in Mandarin without using an English word.
I said yes, but that's how languages work. All languages borrow words from other languages. I said you can't say a sentence in English without using words from other languages.
He said, no, English borrows words but Anglicises them. English doesn't just lift words directly from other languages. I said English absolutely does.
He asked for an example.

I told him "karaoke".
