Twitter doesn't play a huge role directly (unlike Facebook). Journalists and activists love Twitter but floating voters less so. (Overall numbers are a bit misleading because lots of Brits use Twitter to follow TV or sport but don't follow political accounts.)
Most of the best performing tweets in recent weeks have been by @jeremycorbyn - which makes sense because Twitter users tend to be more pro-Labour than the wider population. This tweet popped off: https://twitter.com/jeremycorbyn/status/1191012463455678467?s=19
But political tweets get a second life on other apps - especially Facebook. Rather than slick videos, lots of Corbyn's most successful recent Facebook posts have simply been screenshots of tweets! Seems a bit basic no?

It's not just party leaders. Lily Allen shared this Corbyn tweet with her 1.3m Instagram followers... Meaning a clear, digestible Labour message will be consumed by a lot of people who don't use Twitter.

It isn't just Labour doing this but they're definitely leading the way.
The Tories seem to have got more into it recently - perhaps after noticing how well Labour's similar posts have been doing, on Facebook and Instagram.
As well as official accounts, screenshots circulate in other ways. We found private Facebook groups are packed with Twitter screenshots. Ordinary people also post them on Instagram and in WhatsApp groups. This makes it very hard to track who's winning the 'online election'...
This is happening because of a shift to 'passive news consumption'. People might not consume long articles or videos but maybe, circuiting through apps on the bus, they'll see a screenshot of a Corbyn tweet posted on Lily Allen's Instagram. @mariannaspring https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-50351821
This is the sort of short, declarative tweet that looks like it's tailor-made to be screenshotted on Instagram stories: https://twitter.com/jeremycorbyn/status/1194891636708380672?s=19
