As someone asked me what to put into portfolios if you've not got any credits, here's a quick thread. Starting with -

Don't be ashamed that the samples aren't published. Everyone has to start somewhere. And scarily that also means having the courage to show the samples and -
to deal with rejection.

I still don't make the cut on projects because there are other writers who are a better fit for a particular style of writing/knowledge set/team. Rejection will happen. There are always things to learn from it - I sent the wrong sample, I need to -
-improve the samples, I just wasn't right for the project. Learn and move on.

Back to unpublished - I still use unpublished samples – if I think that writing better illustrates the style of writing a project is asking for. Portfolios are there to demonstrate your writing -
- So pick the material that best fits the job and that shows your strengths. Sometimes...if I can find the time, I will even write a sample to apply for a particular job (and to get a chance to play with some writing).
If you can get a test (preferably paid!) - whoop! Offer this
- Saying again - portfolios are not what you've published, they show what you can write.

C.V.s and websites, however, benefit from at least 'completed' projects.
So, in order -
1) Write. Write anything. Games, TV, theatre, films, comics, books, articles, whatever drives you. Explore and find what you enjoy/are best at.
2) Complete things. Finished projects help. They show commitment, you learn about arcs etc etc. So finish things when the drive is there
3) Make things. Find people to work with and make something. Amateur theatre, gamejams, student groups, Twine projects. This helps you stand out, shows commitment and gives you projects to show. You also learn.

There's a lot of competition and whilst there's no one route in -
- you stand a lot more chance of getting in if you can show your commitment to and understanding of the craft area you're passionate about.

Good luck. Find your voice and keep creating!
