There is some limited discussion of the concept out there.

It is interesting that premature recognition seems to be discussed mostly with reference to independence statehood claims that are not fundamentally challenged.
Raic mentions Algeria, Guinea Bissau, Angola as examples of premature recognition: there was an acknowledgement of a right to government, even in the absence of an ability to exercise it.
This is often also known as 'titular recognition'. I am currently researching the assumption that international #statebuilding in independence-seeking areas links to titular recognition.

First results confirm this but relationship between the two seems to be much more complex.
