Our country is originally called Aotearoa (The Long White cloud) The Land of the long white cloud. Our country is mostly known as New Zealand
https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="š³šæ" title="Flag of New Zealand" aria-label="Emoji: Flag of New Zealand">. The native people of this land are Tangata Whenua (MÄori) the official languages are Te Reo, English and sign Language
The name Aotearoa was given to us by Kuramarotini the wife of Kupe. As they voyaged on Kupeās waka āMatahaoruaā Kuramarotini seen a long white cloud covering the land of NZ and yelled āhe ao, he ao, he aotea roaā (a cloud, a cloud, a great long cloud) and from this came the name.
Kupe is our tupuna (ancestor) he is the one who named many places, he is the one who founded Aotearoa.
Hereās the pakiwaitara (myth) of how our land came:
As Maui and his brothers voyaged on their waka, Maui threw his fish hook into the water and caught a big fish and pulled it out of the water this became the north island of NZ known as āTe Ika a Mauiā (the fish of Maui)
As Maui and his brothers voyaged on their waka, Maui threw his fish hook into the water and caught a big fish and pulled it out of the water this became the north island of NZ known as āTe Ika a Mauiā (the fish of Maui)
Mauiās brothers voyaged on the waka and a storm came which caused big waves that clashed on to the waka causing it to flip, the brothers then got on top of the waka, turning into the mountains (the elder brother is Aoraki) which is the highest peak in NZ (also where @BTS_twt went
Mauiās brothers are the mountains on the South Island and the waka is the land, from this the name āTe Waka a Mauiā came (the waka of Maui) also known as Te Waipounamu.
MÄori are the native people of Aotearoa and our language is Te Reo we have many tikanga (customs) that we still hold on to today but we did lose our language and a lot of our tikanga but our tupuna fought and fought for our rights to get our reo (language)and tikanga back.
One tikanga (custom) we do here is hongi (shown in the photo) this tikanga came from our atua (god) Tanemahuta (God of the forest and all thatās in it) when he created the first woman Hineahuone. When her body was formed Tanemahuta pressed his nose onto hers and gave her air +
From this Hineahuone woke and became the first human element and from her te ira tangata (mankind) was born. Our culture uses the hongi to greet people it is a symbol to unite two wairua (souls) together and be at peace.
