/ Opposing co-ops is the most destructive & insidious myth of modern economic life: The Exit. Our most powerful god, The Exit promises freedom from the masses & from economic servitude. Alas, it also warps capital, investment & ultimately society. https://twitter.com/RobbSmith/status/1194811327711023105
/ The Exit teaches us to escape society by looking up, scanning the skies for a financially-fueled buyer to save us, rather than eyes forward, looking to our coworkers to build a resilient econ. tribe thru saving, investing, taking care of each other. In a word *cooperating*.
/ If you wonder why I harp on resilience, panarchy & scale matching so much, this is why. America is lost, & post-war World State is ending, bc we've centralized control of our econ lives *above our heads" (in Fed, DC, & Wall St). This simply thrashes & warps what's below.
/ As I pointed out in TGR, what's above *should help us remember* our purpose, call us back to our values, & lightly regulate the foment & innovation of lower scales only when necessary.
/ But that's not what's happening. The Exit is proof that the highest-scale level of our economic lives—multinational capital—makes a devastating bargain: "If everyone agrees to run towards heaven, I will let a few of you reach it. The rest of you can stay in hell."
/ To my friends on left: econ progressivism will fail bc you're simply replacing The Exit w The Promise, another myth that infinite claims on finite resources can be real. It can't, & the inflation that hides its lie will only hurt the poor & middle class you want to protect.
/ To my friends on right: The Exit is a lie & we know it. It's a game some of us win. The alternative is not socialism, but a renewed local free market cooperativism w/o distortions of business monopoly, ubiqitous financialization, & opaque capital markets.
