I don’t want to subtweet but literally need to impart to many of the people I respect on here that just because a specific writer is a lovely person and you are friends with them and you love their books doesn’t mean all other people do, especially young adults.
There are some writers I would not put on lists just because I do not like their books, not becusss I think they are scum antheir books should never be read. I feel like it’s okay for me to not like every YA book. But I obviously love the genre and teen girls.
Convos on YA twitter are hard because I feel that people jump to conclusions really fast. And it’s not even like, “I’m hurt by this,” it becomes, “if you disliked this book and think it shouldn’t be recommended and talk publicly about it, you are a bitch who deserves a pile on.”
And it can be true that YA is often demented and belittled because it is often written for and centers teen girls! It is true! I agree! But also, like. If I said, “I don’t want JK Rowling on this reading list,” that doesn’t mean I’m misogynistic.
What I’m trying to get across is that I’m very young and look up to so many people in YA and to see so many engaging in... whatever this was, which dissolved into namecalling and dragging a stranger, scares me bc I can very easily see people dragging me for just being honest.
And as I get older, I worry about actual teens who want to share opinions that might not align with what lots of adults in this community think and get dragged to hell and back for that. It isn’t what happened here, but it’s not that hard to imagine.
Anyway I’m technically a teen for another month so, um, maybe my voice is just as important as the really loud voices of adults in this convo ☺️
