Before class started today students were talking about the surreality of the impeachment hearings and they told me about the "Birds Aren't Real" phenomenon. I'd never heard of it, but they all knew about it. It's quite a trip.
The appropriate referrent for my generation, I think, would be the Andy Kaufman schtick. Is this guy for real? It seems real? But wait, this can't really be real, can it? Do we actually care if it's real? I mean, wHaT eVeN iS rEaLiTy?
Check out their merch. This is hilarious. But it can't be real. Right?

Who wouldn't want to be "woke" when it comes to "birds," right?
This reminded me of the time I was talking about the John Birch Society and their conspiracy theories in my History of Conservatism class; and suddenly the students all pointed out the window and gasped. There was a drone hovering right behind me, peering in the 3rd floor window.
I feel like this is the perfect way to cap off this thread. Motion to start referring to the GOP as the "Birds Aren't Real Party."
