Before class started today students were talking about the surreality of the impeachment hearings and they told me about the "Birds Aren& #39;t Real" phenomenon. I& #39;d never heard of it, but they all knew about it. It& #39;s quite a trip. https://youtu.be/zNtr0RahRqM ">https://youtu.be/zNtr0RahR...
The appropriate referrent for my generation, I think, would be the Andy Kaufman schtick. Is this guy for real? It seems real? But wait, this can& #39;t really be real, can it? Do we actually care if it& #39;s real? I mean, wHaT eVeN iS rEaLiTy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxPtNUKptag">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
Check out their merch. This is hilarious. But it can& #39;t be real. Right?
They& #39;ve even got fake quotes from Presidents.
Who wouldn& #39;t want to be "woke" when it comes to "birds," right?
Anywho...somehow this Birds Aren& #39;t Real thing feels like the perfect metaphor for where we are right now. https://birdsarentreal.com/ ">https://birdsarentreal.com/">...
This reminded me of the time I was talking about the John Birch Society and their conspiracy theories in my History of Conservatism class; and suddenly the students all pointed out the window and gasped. There was a drone hovering right behind me, peering in the 3rd floor window.
I feel like this is the perfect way to cap off this thread. Motion to start referring to the GOP as the "Birds Aren& #39;t Real Party."
