@WhenTheySeeUs taught us the dangers of youth being interrogated by police w/o a lawyer. You can help stop this practice in Baltimore & protect kids from false confessions. Here’s how:
1/
BPD is collecting feedback on its proposed policies for interrogating youth. You can submit yr feedback here https://bit.ly/2XgjPX1  or email [email protected]. The full policy is here https://bit.ly/2O8NkpF .
Please call for 3 easy things: 1.Prohibit custodial interrogation of children until the child has consulted with an attorney.
2: Prohibit the use of deceptive interrogation techniques that are proven to false confessions in children.
3. Revise the Child Miranda Warning Form 68 to use simplified language and include language that requires interrogator to check for understanding.
Submitting comments takes less than a minute, but you could save a child who yields to police pressure and falsely confesses decades in prison.
Because event that “would leave a man cold and unimpressed can overawe and overwhelm a lad ...” The Supreme Court has stressed what “any parent knows”—indeed, what any person knows” that “children characteristically lack the capacity to exercise mature judgment...”
Adolescents lack the experience, perspective, & judgment to recognize choices could be detrimental to them. Young people are extremely vulnerable to complying w/ authority figures & acquiescing, making them vulnerable during the pressure-cooker environment of police interrogation
Children should never face interrogation w/o talking to a lawyer first. Period.
Deadline is Friday 11/15.
