I’m currently at a workshop called “Promising Practices for Inclusive Classrooms” at @Carleton_U. Takeaways and thoughts to come! #cuIncluded
One presenter asked, “why are we so eager to see diversity in the classroom, and why do we slot students into a system that discounts their diverse ways of knowing?” #cuIncluded
Presenter Geraldine King asked us to think about IBPOC and people with various other identities entering a classroom – a space that wasn’t originally made for them/us – and ask, how do you protect people’s spirits and honour their identities?
Presenter Joy Mighty encourages instructors, TAs, to draw a pie chart with slices representing facets of their identity that have shaped their experiences...and then think about the complex identities that shape *student*experiences. #cuIncluded
Presenter Bill Skidmore doesn’t do participation marks. He gives attendance marks, assigns reflection papers, and encourages students to come speak to him and share their experiences. All this to acknowledge multiple ways of learning and to honour folks’ experiences. #cuIncluded
