Yesterday I visited Nottoway Plantation in Louisiana, and I have no words for the horror show of antebellum plantation romance I found there. (photo thread) ⬇️
Greeted at the entrance by banner advertising a 'romantic fairytale wedding' (complete with only white guests of course)
We were met at the entrance by our black American tour guide who started the tour with a scripted introduction including the words 'yes there was slavery here, and yes I am black, but there's no point being bitter about it'. This was the *only* time slavery was mentioned.
(by the way, she was wonderful, friendly and helpful with all of our questions)
Two of these are in the entrance hallway, in fact they're the first thing you see as you walk in. The worst thing about this is that they are not original to the house. If they are not original, then why are they there except to reinforce white fantasies about black servitude?
Behind the big house you'll find guest bedrooms in the style of holiday home slave cabins. Is it any wonder you don't see a single black American guest visiting this place?
In the plantation museum there is one board on slavery. It tells visitors that 'various records indicate they were treated well for the time'. I'm guessing these records all come from the enslavers?
Here's a picture of the swimming pool next to the big house?
Nottoway plantation advertises itself as a 'plantation resort' rather than plantation museum, but that is no excuse. Places like this contribute to the continued romanticisation of racial injustice under slavery and facilitate white fantasies about benevolent slave holding. *End*
