I’ve spent the last 5 yrs researching a book on the history of the Texas death penalty. I’ve been stunned how many times someone has been executed despite evidence they might not have committed murder. (That’s not to say they’re truly innocent, since one can never really know.)
But I learned a lot about why it’s so hard for these arguments to stick in the courts, and over at @MarshallProj I wrote up an explainer about the #RodneyReed case. https://www.themarshallproject.org/2019/11/13/how-do-you-prove-you-re-innocent-if-you-re-on-death-row">https://www.themarshallproject.org/2019/11/1...
Some of the cases are ones you may have heard of, like Cameron Todd Willingham (forensic experts declared the fire that killed his kids was prob accidental, not arson) and Carlos DeLuna (it later came out that another Carlos was the likely perpetrator). https://www.themarshallproject.org/2014/08/03/did-texas-execute-an-innocent-man-willingham">https://www.themarshallproject.org/2014/08/0...
