So I saw this article today about how @josephamadigan wants to ''start' a national conversation about porn in #Ireland. Which is weird, considered the leader of her party, Enda Kenny, called for this in 2016- did she miss this??This national conversation has been in full swing 1/
for 3 years now. Enda Kenny started the first one, which was generally terrible- fear mongering, no experts, trivial approaches. The second round of the national conversation on porn in Ireland occurred in 2018, when my report on how bad the first round had been was published. 2/
This round, the conversations had experts, was more balanced, but still resulted in not much progress. But it was calmer, more ethical, and began offering solutions to address the issue. @NewstalkFM made a video with @iamsarahsproule and I: 4/
And of course many others (nearly all women) ahve been writing about porn since 2016 and supporting parents to have this conversation. @josephamadigan's comments about 'starting' a conversation erases all the hard work done over the past three years to introduce calm, 10/
fact & evidence based conversations about porn in Ireland. This is not new, and the sex education review is also looking at porn. Ms Madigan might be wise to read the work thats been done rather than erase it. This is round 4, not round 1, and we have made some progress. 11/
So she could join us, rather than ignore all the work thats being done ethically. And maybe use her government position to fund modern sex education that addresses pornography while funding support services for parents. Action, not soundbites. End.
