So, seeing as there seems to be newfound interest in historical and historical fantasies featuring lesbian and queer women, I’m going to recommend a few things that may not be on your radar. A thread follows. #historicals #queerwomen
Starting with my pal, @heatherosejones. Heather runs a blog with extensive amounts of research on queer women and lesbians specifically in historical context. You can find that here: https://www.alpennia.com/lhmp/about
@heatherosejones also has a new book coming out in her historical fantasy series, Alpennia. Lots of good stuff in here, including several novels and short stories! https://www.alpennia.com/books/series/alpennia
And Heather has a podcast that pays pro rates and which is going to be open to historical fantasies for the first time this January #podcast #LHMPodcast #lesbiansinfantasy https://www.alpennia.com/lhmp/essays/call-submissions-2020-lesbian-historic-motif-podcast-fiction-series
Benny Lawrence is, in my humble opinion, one of the most underrated writers of queer fiction that I think of (and that’s a big pool). SHELLGAME and BEGGER’S FLIP are very much worth checking out. http://binkbooks.bedazzledink.com/authors/benny-lawrence/
Sacchi Green’s anthology WITCHES, PRINCESSES AND WOMEN AT ARMS is closer to historical fantasy than to erotic proper (full disclosure: my alter ego has a story in this). Also #queerfairytaleretellings, just saying. https://www.amazon.com/Witches-Princesses-Women-Arms-Lesbian/dp/1627782281
Author Cynthia Ward has a fun pulpy historical/alternate history/fantastical series with queer female characters called “The Blood-Thirsty Agent” http://www.aqueductpress.com/authors/CynthiaWard.php
Purely historical (no fantasy elements) tales with lesbian and queer female protagonists are their own category and I recommend looking at Heather’s lists for more of those.
What are some of your small press or indie-published favorite historical fantasies with lesbian or queer female protagonists? I’m looking for some good reads too!
