Good morning #agtwitter! I'm in Saskatoon, Sask. for the Public Trust Summit put on by @FoodIntegrityCA. Get ready to learn with me about the connection with the consumer. #CCFI2019
Interesting to note, 10% of attendees are students from high school or post-secondary as admission to #CCFI2019 was reduced for students by the Sask. agriculture dept.
Throughout the conference, videos will be playing that were shot in downtown Toronto to ask people on the street various questions about food. First video was, 1-10 how well do you trust Canada's food system. Answered varied... 8/6/7/9/10/5 ... 1/2
Gentleman to said 5 was concerned about #GMO's and how he's constantly eating them without knowing... along with pesticides, just for big companies "to make profit over quality" 2/2
Hearing from Dr. @AstroDaveMD who hails from #YXE. Has travelled to space twice, received the Order of Canada in 2013, among other accolades. Today he's speaking about transparency, trust and collaboration. #CCFI2019
How'd he get in the biz? "Just a curious kid from Saskatchewan." Goes on to say in order to find solutions, there must be clarity. People also need to take out the 'I-M" in impossible and make change possible. Also, must look outside of the box when it comes to collab #CCFI2019
After a short break, hearing from @paightonsmyth now with the results of their 2019 research dubbed, "Connecting with Canadians"

Ready for the findings? Follow along!
3 areas of focus:

Public trust tracking - Key issues within Canada's food system

Digital Ethnography - A deeper dive into the 'investigator' and 'competitor' consumer

Online conversations - What messages resonate with Canadian consumers
#CCFI2019
Public trust tracking (PTT): Interesting that this year the research is consistent with 2018, in that only 1in3 Canadian consumers believe Canada's food system is headed in the right direction ➡️ #CCFI2019
PPT cont.: Top 5 issues, co$t is remains in the lead for the 4th year in a row! Other concerns in the food system include climate change, food safety, humane treatment of animals, having enough food in 🇨🇦, having enough food to feed people outside of 🇨🇦. #CdnAg #CCFI2019
INTERESTING: 91% know little or nothing about modern farming. Some consider it to be the definition of factory farms, big AG corps, poor animal welfare, decreased food quality. When in fact, it translates to drones, auto steer tractors, milking robotics etc. #CCFI2019
However, 60% are interested in knowing more.

"The more consumers feel empowered & informed, the more they build trust in the Canadian food system."

Side bar: In prev. report only 30% surveyed wanted to 'learn' more...(lady in crowd made the comparison)
When it comes to TRUST: 71% believe farmers/producers are responsible for providing Canadians with credible information.

BUT: Just 42% say they trust farmers/producers in Canada's food system. #CCFI2019
More info on findings about the 'investigator' and 'competitor' #CCFI2019
So what's next? We need more:

🔹Transparency
🔹 Collaboration
🔹Positive messaging
🔹 More research on what medium people use to get their info (Twitter/tv/online/ etc.)
