Today I heard of a Head of School not going out on #UCUstrikesback because "it wouldn't be fair on the staff, especially the School admins". This is getting it all backwards. 1/ @ucu @ucustandrews
It's not fair on your staff to undermine the effort to maintain the quality of their pensions.
It's not fair on your staff to undermine the effort to reduce their overwhelming workloads. 2/
It's not fair on your staff to undermine the effort to improve their levels of pay.
It's not fair on your staff to undermine the effort to address the systematic issues that lead to disability, ethnicity, and gender pay gaps. 3/
It's not fair on your staff to undermine efforts to rid the sector of casualisation which leads to horrible insecurity for staff, and stops some people entering the profession all together. 4/
These apply to all staff - academic, professional, admin, support, everyone! The industrial action is there to make things better for us all, and by not taking part, you're undermining that attempt to make things better for everyone. 5/
If you're concerned about placing extra burden on staff during the strike/asos period - don't! Tell staff that they are not to take on any more burden due to the strike. Tell them you do not expect them to do things that you would normally be doing. 6/
Give them a statement/signed letter that explains the Head of School is on strike and so that super important deadline will not be met. Set up the out of office on the Head of School email to say no-one will be checking it during the strike. 7/
The way to reduce burden on your staff is by not expecting them to do more than their normal job - not by not striking! Show them you care by fighting for better conditions, opportunities, pay, and pensions. 8/8
