David Villa is one of the greatest strikers of all time - and Spain's absolute greatest. Upon retiring, he hopefully finally receives the credit he deserves. He has been constantly underrated and disgracefully overlooked throughout his entire career.
For too long in Spain, David Villa was ignored because he wasn't at one of the big two clubs. All the while he not only scored regularly for a Valencia in a state of transition, but also revolutionised the way a striker plays. He progressed the role before anyone else did.
His ability to play from a wide role yet still maintain the scoring record of a centre-forward was unprecedented. Every single club he played for improved with him in the team, such was the weight of his presence. From Sporting to NYCFC, this was a constant aspect in his career.
Perhaps the most overlooked chapter in Villa's career was his time with Spain. Before his full integration there was a nauseating clamour for Raúl to constantly be part of the setup. Luis Aragonés rose above this and pissed a whole country off to involve Villa. Never forget this.
It is not a coincidence that Spain's 44-year trophy wait ended with the emergence of Villa in the team. Much is made of the midfield and rightly so, but they could've never fully evolved without Villa's input as a complete attacking player.
Bottom line; one of the best to ever do it, @Guaje7Villa. “Illa, illa, illa..."
