New research from @CitizensAdvice today on council tax collection. FOI request shows current regulations push councils to use inefficient methods of collection (bailiffs).
Councils have too few powers without getting a court order - when they do it too often results in bailiffs chasing debts
When bailiffs collect debt - they not only mistreat people and break rules - they're not very effective. On average they only collect 30p for every £1 they chase.
And they're inefficient. They cost people and councils nearly £200 million last year. Over 50p for every £1 they collected.
