Today marks 90 years since the death of Richard Henry, who started translocations and #kakapo #conservation more than 50 years before anyone else. His achievements were barely noticed, but his dedication and courage inspire us in #kakaporecovery today. 📷 Hocken Library
Richard Henry’s pens are still visible today. Contrary to popular myth, he kept kiwi, not #kakapo, in these. Kākāpō were temporarily housed in cages in his store; they would have easily climbed out of open-topped pens as these would have been. #conservation #fiordland
Richard Henry almost singled-handedly transferred 100s of #kakapo and #kiwi to the (relative) safety of Resolution Island. Our efforts are insignificant next to his, but next year we hope to complete what he started by returning kākāpō to the very same place. #conservation
