Last night Toronto got 10+ cm snow. Guy in food delivery chat shares screenshot of a McDonalds on Uber hitting $14 delivery fee. I know there’s a lot of ethical debate on surge pricing for Uber rides being a safety issue, but this is ABSOLUTELY how all food delivery should work.

For the record what happens on platforms that don’t do surge/boost pricing is not that people are “forced” to work, but that people bail on shifts, the platform gets backed up with orders, it throttles and stops accepting new orders.

Because of course any “forcing” to work would interfere with our independent contractor classification. There’s an active case before the Ontario Labour Board right now so they’re being extra careful, to the temporary benefit of workers. Until the unions ruin it for us.
